Nebraska Highways are Seeing an Upsurge in Speeding
Nebraska has recently witnessed a startling rise in the number of high-speed driving citations, highlighting an urgent need for both tighter enforcement and an understanding of legal rights.
In the month of July alone, the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) stopped a staggering 118 drivers for clocking in at speeds of 100 miles per hour or more, marking the highest number of such citations since July 2020. To put this in context, the NSP recorded an average of 85 drivers per month exceeding the 100 mph mark throughout the year. Additionally, 505 drivers were cited for speeds ranging between 90 and 99 miles per hour in the same month, with a monthly average of 421 drivers hitting such speeds.
These statistics are not isolated to the state highways. The metro area of Omaha too has seen an uptick in speeding. NSP Sgt. Justin Grint highlights the correlation between warmer temperatures and excessive speeding, noting that summertime sees a larger influx of vehicles on the road. “More people are hitting the roads, there’s more people out and about,” Grint shared. This surge in traffic, combined with the thrill of summer, often translates to more drivers pushing past speed limits, sometimes even exceeding 100 miles per hour.
The “Speed Catches Up With You”
Recognizing the severity of the issue, Nebraska law enforcement has ramped up its measures. The “Speed Catches Up With You” campaign, backed by the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office, saw multiple law enforcement agencies collaborating between July 10 and July 31. Additionally, the Omaha police and the NSP have unified their efforts to clamp down on the dangerous trend.
