Honor and Sacrifice: Join Us for the Run to St. Lo Memorial Event
The 53 Nebraska National Guard soldiers killed during the Liberation of Saint Lo were part of the 134th Infantry Regiment, a unit almost entirely made up of Nebraskans. They landed in France in early July 1944, shortly after D-Day, and were soon thrust into some of the fiercest fighting of the war.
The Battle of Saint Lo
The Battle of Saint Lo was a critical engagement in the Allied breakout of Normandy. The town itself was a transportation hub, and controlling it was essential for the Allied advance. The fighting was brutal, characterized by close-quarters combat in the dense hedgerows that divided the Norman countryside. The German forces were well-entrenched and put up a fierce resistance.
The Role of the 134th Infantry Regiment
The 134th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed “The Cornhuskers,” played a major role in the battle. They fought their way through the hedgerows, suffering heavy casualties but steadily pushing the Germans back. Unfortunately, the cost of victory was high.
