Lincoln residents may be aware that there are some issues in the area with prescription drug abuse. However, more serious drug charges have been cropping up recently due to the increased use of illegal street drugs such as heroin, which has seen a spike in usage recently.
This may be the case with three people over the month of October. One died from an overdose and two were hospitalized. However, due to the low usage of heroin in the area, some are finding three people overdosing on heroin in such a small timeframe to be very suspicious.
There has been some speculation that the decrease in prescription drug abuse and increase in heroin purchases has been caused by the changes made to heroin itself. Just fifteen years ago, agents reported that only 15 to 20 percent of heroin was pure. Today, however, it has been reported that purity can range up to 50 percent. It is also becoming cheaper to buy. On the other hand, prescription drugs are becoming harder to get, which makes them a less desirable product.
Even though it may be easier to get heroin now, the consequences for being caught with illegal substances of any kind is still the same. Drug possession can result in serious charges, jail time, fines and marks on your permanent record which could prevent you from getting a job you might want.
